What I Saw When I Ran Wednesdays

For those of you who read food blogs, you will often see a “What I Ate Wednesday” post. Same idea here, except it will be what I saw when I ran on Wednesdays.  So take a peek at what my orbs observed and then add your own experience!

My original plan for tonight was to do a solo quickie run around Cape May. As I was driving home I got a most unexpected phone call from a certain Mr. Davis asking if I wanted to run with him. Yes, you read that right. Most, strike that, all Mr. and Mrs. Davis runs are the result of Mrs. Davis begging Mr. Davis to join her, which he will do with varying degrees of reluctance. I have no idea what the motivation behind tonight’s call was and was too excited to stop and ask (it’s the runner’s version of “shoot and ask questions later”. If GD wants to run with me, that is all I need to know!). Upon reflection, I am pretty sure it is just one more indication that the end of the world is coming. But I thank the Mayans kindly for those beach miles with my hubby. Here is what we saw:

The lighthouse from a different direction than I normally show it – we did a beach run!

The Davis shadows had a splendid time as well!

Lady crab doing her thang in the intertidal zone.

There must have been a memo circulated among the gulls that it was “carry random objects around in your bill” night.

See? “Oh, your stick is so 2011. Real gulls carry rockweed. Gets the ladies every time. Oh, yeah.”

I’m pretty sure nothing is gonna make me happier than a run on the beach with my hubby in our hometown. *scans through mental inventory of things that make me happy* Yep.

Beach plums for a post-race treat? Don’t mind if I do!

What did you see on your run today?

Philadelphia Marathon and Half-Marathon Update: It looks like a few more people are hopping on the race day band wagon and I could not be happier! Next week marks 10 weeks til the race – a very doable time frame to train for the half. Anyone else want to join us? Act fast, the race will fill up soon!

Last group run for August! Because of my schedule this week, I had to switch up my runs and do a two-fer today to get my 6 miles in. I did three tempo ones at lunch and then 3.3 tonight with the group. In between I went to the doctor and found out that I have some sort of bacterial or viral infection in my throat. It is the oddest thing, my throat feels like it is on fire, but the rest of me feels fine! So I have kept up with my running, figuring my body will let me know if it doesn’t want to go. So far, so good! Now I have some antibiotics to help with the battle and figure I will be feeling fire throat-free in a few days. Hurray!

This late August day was a real gift – a cold front came through and cooled us down. More importantly, it dehumidified us, making even a lunch time run quite enjoyable! Here is what we saw tonight:

GD’s new kicks! Hello, real running shoes, good-bye Timberlands (at least for running)!

We posed for pictures for Paige and Janet. Janet is working on a graphic design logo for CIR (very exciting!!) and wanted some realistic pics of runners. For her part, Paige’s new haircut looked super cute!

All the work that Bill and Edie put into their garden is really paying off as it was butterfly central tonight!

When 3 of the 4 runners are also birders, stopping to check out a Sora roadkill is a must!

Lil sis takes the time to extinguish the light before heading out! Thanks lightkeeper Laur!

We headed back to the house where we continued our tradition of the men cooking for the ladies! Hake, scallops, broccoli and succotash were enjoyed by all!

What did you see on your run today?

Decided to make it a two-a-day (this AM and the group run tonight)  since I am oddly enjoying the crazy humidity during my morning runs. Sure, I felt slow and was drenched within .1 mile of starting (ok, who am I kidding, I was drenched within seconds of walking out the door!) but there is just something so lovely about running on  a summer morning. I am trying to put my finger on exactly why something that should be so unpleasant is actually the opposite for me. I think it is a combination of a few things. The first is that I have been running on summer mornings for 20+ years and I think I just like feeling that connection to summers past. The second reason is a little harder to explain,  so bear with me. You know how in movies, they depict life in a way that doesn’t usually mirror reality? I remember watching all the John Hughes movies as a kid and thinking that was what high school was going to be like. Then I got there and it was like “huh? what is this??”cause it bore so little resemblance to what I expected. And man was I surprised to find out that there was no pouring rain or a chase through an airport before the first time I said the words “I love you”, lol.  But I feel like movies nail summer on the head – they convey the languid feeling, the hazy skies, the sound of insects abuzz, the sunbeams through trees …and as a movie lover, I think these morning runs make me feel a little like I am cruising through a movie set from Stand By Me or Man In The Moon or Fried Green Tomatoes. Does that make any sense?

This is what passes for a busy street in my neighborhood at the height of summer. Love!

Our post office, straight out of Mayberry (RIP Andy Griffith)

GD and I will never be able to afford a house here (and maybe that is a good thing considering sea level rise!) but if this place ever went up for sale, I might have to sell some organs or become a bank thief because it has been a favorite since I first saw it in 2001. I wonder if I pulled an Oprah and just knocked on the door and offered, oh, I don’t know, like $10 if they would sell it?

Cape May Red Store – the only business in Cape May Point. It was recently taken over by new owners and the store and restaurant are top notch! Definitely check it out!

My go-to turn around touch point at Sunset Beach. Oh, the breeze there was a delight today!

One run down and one to go! Come join us for round two tonight! Meet at the Cape May Point State Park entrance at 6 pm…. and bring a bathing suit cause this one is definitely going to be followed by a dip in the ocean!

Do you like summer running?

What is something that others find unpleasant that you like to do?

Favorite movie with summer as a backdrop?

What did you see on your run today? If no run, what did you see while out and about?

First day of summer deserves “two a days”, ie two runs in one day. Especially considering how hot it will be later, I thought it would be fun to run once in the AM by myself in the cooler weather and once in the PM with friends in the heat. 3 miles for each run, same route.

AM Run:

Rosa rugosa, or Beach Rose, my favorite plant. Its rose hips were used by sailors to help prevent scurvy while at sea since it is high in Vitamin C. I like to eat them just in case!

I always thought this was a woman holding a baby but today I started to think it is a dude. More runs are needed to investigate!

Sprinklers were a very common sight today – people are preparing their plants for the heat ahead!

This was the Cape May Point Country Club, opened in 1899 when the town was trying to build a sense of social status for its inhabitants. Those days are over, but the building remains.

PM Route:

I remembered my camera for CIR’s first group run, but not the memory card, doh! Nor did I have a cord, so at the end of this day I opted to take an iPhone pic of the camera screen. Very classy, I know! But we had a great run, come out next week and join us!

Sprinklers were a welcome addition to the run!

Lil sis and Scott, my running husband, are two of my favorite running buds!

High five for the finish, followed by an awesome swim in the ocean. Summer is the best, end of story.

What I Saw When I Ran Wednesdays

Wednesday we headed to Olney, MD for a lil family reunion with the Davis clan. We went to see GD’s aunt, uncle and cousins, some of who he has not seen in a decade or more, and many who I have never met.  To avoid the Philly, DC and Baltimore traffic, we decided to take the first ferry of the day, which left port at  730a. Early morning run it was! I didn’t mind a bit though as this time of year I habitually get up at first light, and the chorus of birds inviting me to get up and out had me popping out of bed around 5. Here are some of the things I saw in my almost hour long jaunt around Cape May Point and West Cape May between 530a-630a this morning:

Cape May Lighthouse – light is still flashing its beacon on this cloudy, windy morning. After running in it’s constant presence for the last 9 months, this lighthouse has started to symbolize home for me.

Not to runners!

Good morning skimmies! Black skimmers, a state endangered species, enjoying the quiet of a Cape May morning.

This is what I saw when I looked down, as I often do when running 🙂

Is there anything cuter than this car??

The straight shot down Sunset Blvd is going to come in very handy for long intervals and tempos runs during marathon training later this summer!

Milkweed jungle on Seagrove will hopefully be a nursery to monarch eggs and caterpillars very soon (if not already)!

An hour later and the light is off, sea farers safe for another day.

I got back to the house a half hour before we had to leave to find GD languorously waking up. He proceeded to shower and shave at a luxurious pace, while I clucked around the house like a crazed chicken, worried that we’d miss our ferry. As he predicted, we made it with time to spare and I was finally able to exhale!

What did you see on your run Wednesday?

If you are not a runner, what was something you saw while being active on Wednesday?
